Jensen Ackles shared a heartfelt message about resilience, growth and the importance of strong relationships while addressing graduates during a recent commencement speech.
The Supernatural star began with a lighthearted joke, telling the audience, “I did not use ChatGPT. Probably would have given you something better than you’re about to hear,” before turning to lessons he has learned throughout his career.
Ackles spoke about the role rejection can play in shaping a person’s future, explaining that missed opportunities are not always setbacks. Instead, they can lead to something even greater.
“The auditions you don’t get are the ones that redirect you to somewhere else,” Ackles said, recalling how landing a role in Supernatural ultimately changed the course of his career and led to the hit series running for 15 seasons.
Despite his success, Ackles admitted that self-doubt never completely disappeared. Reflecting on his first experience directing, he revealed that stepping behind the camera was one of the most intimidating moments of his career.
“The first time I stepped behind the camera, I was terrified,” he said. “It still felt like someone was going to tap me on the shoulder and say, ‘You don’t actually know what you’re doing, do you?'”

Rather than fearing uncertainty, Ackles encouraged graduates to embrace it as a sign of personal development.
“It’s called being at the edge of your competence,” he explained. “And it is exactly where growth lives.”
The actor also opened up about the determination that helped him secure a role in The Boys. According to Ackles, the opportunity did not come easily, and there were several moments when he believed it might slip away.
“I auditioned multiple times. They considered other people. They wanted somebody older, somebody different,” Ackles recalled. “There were real moments when I thought this isn’t going to happen. But I didn’t walk away.”
While much of the speech focused on perseverance and professional growth, Ackles also highlighted the value of meaningful relationships. Looking back on his 15 years working alongside his Supernatural co-star, he described how friendship became a crucial source of support through demanding filming schedules, injuries, long periods away from family and even the challenges brought on by the pandemic.
“Having that partner, someone to rely on, someone who would rely on you, is sometimes the only thing that got us through,” he said.
As he concluded his remarks, Ackles delivered what many viewed as the central message of the speech, urging graduates to cherish the people who stand beside them during life’s toughest moments.
“You cannot manufacture that. You build it slowly through consistency, through showing up,” he said, before leaving graduates with a final challenge: “Find those people. Be those people. And guard those relationships.”
