Even as Outlander approaches the end of its television journey, the franchise continues to find new ways to bring fans together. More than a decade after the series premiered, the world of Jamie and Claire is stepping beyond the screen with “Outlander in Concert,” a new live experience celebrating the music that helped define one of television’s most beloved dramas.
The concert made its world premiere at The Usher Hall in Edinburgh, launching a tour that will travel across multiple countries, much like the globe-spanning story at the heart of the series itself. Featuring orchestral performances, live vocals, and memorable moments from all eight seasons, the event highlights a part of Outlander that many fans consider just as important as the characters: its music.
For Sam Heughan, who has played Jamie Fraser throughout the show’s run, the soundtrack has always been more than background music.
“It’s such a character of the show, the music,” Heughan said. “It has its own life and really is very emotional when you listen to it.”
As Outlander prepares to conclude with its final episode in May 2026, Heughan reflected on the emotional connection fans have developed with the series’ score over the years.
“The opening theme tune, it’s so iconic. To hear that would be amazing.”
The evening featured musical tributes to key moments from the series, with scenes from across eight seasons brought to life through orchestral arrangements. Fans and cast members alike were swept up in the emotion as familiar themes filled the historic venue.
John Bell, who portrays Young Ian, highlighted one of his favorite musical moments from the series.
“I really love Young Ian’s return and the beautiful music that comes with that,” Bell said. “The first time you see him after he lived with the mohawk for two years and comes back with the Transformation – I think that’s always a very effective moment.”
The impact of the music extends beyond the original series. Harriet Slater, who plays Ellen MacKenzie in the prequel Outlander: Blood of My Blood, recalled listening to one particular piece from the soundtrack long before joining the franchise.
“I remember flying back from my recall up in Scotland back down to London where I was living at the time and listening to ‘The Dance of The Druids’ from the Outlander soundtrack and it was so atmospheric and ethereal,” Slater said. “It was perfect as you’re ascending into the clouds.”
Much of the praise naturally centers on composer Bear McCreary, whose work has become synonymous with the franchise. His score evolved alongside the story, incorporating traditional Scottish influences, Caribbean rhythms, and American bluegrass as the narrative expanded across continents and centuries.
For Blood of My Blood star Jamie Roy, McCreary’s music helped elevate some of the prequel’s most memorable scenes.
“When Brian and Ellen meet on the bridge for the first time and you hear that theme, there’s something just so magical about it and it adds so much to the scene,” Roy said.
The prequel’s second season is set to premiere this fall, giving fans another opportunity to experience McCreary’s signature sound.
Executive producers Maril Davis and Matthew B. Roberts also praised the composer’s contributions to the franchise’s success.
“It turned out [McCreary] had studied the Jacobite era and he was really into bagpipes and that sound,” Davis said. “He was a perfect choice.”
Roberts added, “[McCreary] grew with the show, just like everybody. When it changed locations, he changed locations with it. He changed the music, he grew exactly what we needed and when the show needed it.”
The timing of the concert is especially fitting as fans celebrate World Outlander Day on June 1. For Heughan, the live event felt like the perfect way to honor the franchise and the community that has supported it for more than 12 years.
“I feel like this is a great celebration, isn’t it? I think around the world we can celebrate ‘Outlander.’”
With the series finale approaching, Outlander in Concert offers fans a chance to relive the story through one of its most powerful elements. The tour heads to the United States beginning September 25 before returning to the United Kingdom in February and continuing across Europe, with additional dates expected to be announced.
For fans not quite ready to say goodbye to Jamie and Claire, the music is ensuring the journey continues a little longer.
