Outlander Stars Reveal Their Different Theories About Claire and Jamie’s Fate After the Emotional Series Finale
Warning: Major spoilers ahead for “And the World Was All Around Us,” the final episode of Outlander, now available to stream on Starz.
The final episode of Outlander has officially brought the beloved historical fantasy series to a close, but the ending has left plenty of room for interpretation — including for the show’s own stars, Caitríona Balfe and Sam Heughan.
Speaking during Variety’s In Conversation With series presented by Starz, the actors reflected on the emotional ending of Season 8 and shared their own thoughts about what really happened to Claire and Jamie in the final moments of the series.
“Are they in this realm or the next? Jamie is a ghost or another ghost, maybe it’s his younger self calling Claire to him,” Heughan said. “And if you look closely, you’ll see they’re both lying there on the magic stone, so maybe they’re in a different realm.”
Balfe revealed that fans are unlikely to ever agree on a single interpretation of the ending.
“Every single person has their own idea about what, perhaps, should happen,” Balfe said. “And as people who were on the show from the very beginning and lived and breathed these characters, you have your [own] desire.”
Based on Diana Gabaldon’s bestselling historical fantasy novels, Outlander follows the epic romance between Jamie Fraser, a Scottish Highlander, and Claire Fraser, a nurse who travels through time. The series finale concludes with Claire and Jamie lying side by side with their eyes closed, Claire’s hair now grey, before both suddenly gasp for air as the credits begin to roll.
For Balfe, filming that final sequence became one of the most emotional moments of the entire production.
“Because it was almost the end of the shoot. I remember [Sam] being really sweet because I had an absolute breakdown on one of the days … I was in bits!” she recalled.
Heughan also highlighted another powerful moment from the finale: the closing montage that celebrates Claire and Jamie’s journey and revisits many of the characters who shaped the story over the years.
“We get to see all of the wonderful moments that we’ve had on the show and all the great characters,” he said. “There’s lots of goodbyes to every character, and each character gets their moment. The series as a whole is our legacy.”
The actors also revealed that Outlander nearly ended earlier than expected. According to Balfe and Heughan, their original contracts only covered the series through Season 7.
“At the time, it felt like we would have been cheating the story, wrapping it up very quickly,” Balfe said. “We wanted to honor this journey and say goodbye in the right way.”
Heughan agreed, adding, “When we got to the end of [Season] 7, it just didn’t feel satisfying.”
Now, two years after production wrapped, both stars have had time to process the end of a series that defined a major chapter of their careers. While they have said goodbye to the show itself, Heughan believes one final farewell still remains.
“But I think the last goodbye is to the fans, isn’t it?” Heughan said.
