When it premiered in 2005, no one could have imagined that Supernatural would become a cultural phenomenon. The fantasy horror series went on to become The CW’s longest-running show, concluding after 15 seasons in 2020.
The series finale aired on November 19, 2020. While it wasn’t universally loved by fans, it wrapped up Sam and Dean Winchester’s story. Over the years, there have been talks about a possible reboot, but five years later, no official announcements have been made. Now, fans have received some disappointing news: Supernatural is reportedly leaving Netflix on December 18, according to What’s on Netflix.
The announcement gives fans just enough time to binge their favorite episodes, though with a total runtime of approximately 221 hours, completing a full re-watch in a month might be a challenge.
Netflix had an agreement with The CW to stream the series, with the original licensing deal granting the platform exclusive rights for about five years after the finale aired. Since Supernatural recently hit its five-year anniversary, its time on Netflix is now up.
Supernatural isn’t the only show affected by this five-year deal. Arrow and The 100, both of which also ended in 2020, are set to leave Netflix on December 18 as well. There’s no confirmation yet on where these series will land next, but it’s likely Warner Bros., their parent company, will move them to HBO Max, where they are already available in several international territories.
Talks of a Supernatural revival began in late 2023. During the Creation Honolulu convention, lead actors Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki hinted that the story could continue, saying they have “some ideas.” However, no official confirmation has been made since.
In an April 2024 interview with CBR to promote his CW series Walker, Padalecki teased that discussions about a revival might happen in 2025. He explained, “I think in the last two or three seasons of Supernatural, when we realized somebody might want more, we said, ‘2025. In 2020, we’re ending this. Let’s get together in five years and see what Sam and Dean are up to.’”
What’s Next for the Supernatural Stars?
While a reunion isn’t off the table, both Ackles and Padalecki have moved on to different projects. Both actors have left The CW, especially after Walker was canceled early, and have now developed relationships with CBS and Prime Video.
Jensen Ackles has a recurring role on CBS’ hit show Tracker, while Padalecki has started working on Fire Country, which is expected to lead to his own spinoff, and will explore more projects with CBS through an upcoming untitled medical series.
On Prime Video, Ackles has multiple projects. His Countdown action series was a summer hit, though it was canceled after one season. He previously starred on The Boys and will now get his own prequel spinoff, Vought Rising. Padalecki is also set to join Ackles for a Supernatural reunion on The Boys Season 5, alongside their co-star Misha Collins.
Fans can also dive back into the Supernatural universe through a new licensed comic book series. Written by Greg Pak with art by Eder Messias, colors by Thyago Brandao, and lettering by Jeff Eckleberry, the series is set before the events of the Season 1 finale.
Supernatural will be available to stream on Netflix until December 18, giving fans just a month to revisit the Winchester brothers’ epic journey.
