Outlander has never been shy about throwing new faces into the mix — and Season 8, its final chapter, is no exception. As the story moves closer to its conclusion, several key characters arrive at Fraser’s Ridge and beyond, each bringing tension, mystery, and emotional fallout for Claire and Jamie Fraser.
Here’s a closer look at the three newcomers set to shake things up in the final season.
Captain Charles Cunningham
One of the most intriguing additions to Season 8 is Captain Charles Cunningham, played by Kieran Bew. A retired British soldier, Cunningham is far from a one-note villain.
Showrunner Matthew B. Roberts explains:
“We always have to have a good villain, and what I love about Cunningham is, in the very typical Outlander way, he’s got so many levels to him that he doesn’t always feel like a villain.”
Roberts compares him to some of the show’s most morally complex characters:
“Just like Geillis Duncan [Lotte Verbeek‘s time traveler], or Tom Christie [the devout farmer played by Mark Lewis Jones], or Stephen Bonnet [Ed Speleers‘ pirate], they feel horribly icky one moment, and then in another moment, you feel like they just need a hug and they would be a better person. That’s Cunningham.”
Since Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Heughan) left North Carolina, Cunningham has taken up residence at Fraser’s Ridge — and his presence won’t go unnoticed.
“The dynamic between Cunningham and both Jamie and Claire is a really cool arc.”
Elspeth Cunningham
If Captain Cunningham commands attention, his mother Elspeth Cunningham ensures it stays there.
Played by Frances Tomelty, Elspeth makes a memorable entrance early in the season, quickly earning a nickname from one of the Ridge’s younger residents. According to Roberts, she’s unlike anyone the show has introduced in a long time.
“She’s such a different character than we’ve had in a long time.”
Most of her screen time will place her opposite Claire — a pairing filled with tension rather than friendship.
“In different circumstances, you would think Claire and Elspeth might be really good friends,”
Roberts notes, adding that their current situation makes that impossible. Whether Elspeth is as dangerous as her son remains to be seen, but in classic Outlander fashion, her moral compass is anything but clear.
Amaranthus Grey
Amaranthus Grey, played by Carla Woodcock, arrives tied to Lord John Grey’s world, placing her directly in the path of his emotionally scarred adopted son, William Ransom.
Her role is deliberately difficult to define.
“Amaranthus has so many dimensions that you can’t just pin a label on her,”
Roberts teases.
“Is she a villain? Is she an antagonist? Is she a collaborator?”
Readers of Diana Gabaldon’s novels may recognize her name, but even they shouldn’t expect a predictable path in the TV adaptation.
