The end of Outlander is coming… but almost no one knows how it ends.
As the beloved historical drama prepares for its eighth and final season, executive producer Matthew B. Roberts revealed that the series finale has been kept tightly under wraps — even from much of the cast.
And yes, they filmed more than one ending.
Only a Few People Know the Truth
In a new interview, Roberts explained just how secretive the production has been.
“There’s a small handful of people that have seen it all the way through,” he shared. “I think keeping it close to the vest and a surprise to a lot of people made it a little more special.”
The goal? To give fans closure — without spoiling the emotional impact for the actors themselves.
“What we tried to do is answer as many questions as we could authentically,” Roberts added. “There’s so many great storylines that get tied up — whether it’s in a tight bow or a very loose bow, that’s for the fans to judge.”
Caitríona Balfe Is in the Dark Too
Even Caitríona Balfe — who plays Claire Fraser opposite Sam Heughan’s Jamie — doesn’t know what’s coming.
She admitted she has only seen the first three episodes of Season 8.
“I am as curious and in anticipation of seeing the rest of the season as everyone else will be,” she said.
That means fans and stars alike will be watching the final chapters unfold in real time.
Yes, They Really Filmed Multiple Endings
Roberts revealed the production went the extra mile to preserve the mystery.
“They all could have been the ending, and that’s why people believed them,” he noted.
Executive producer Maril Davis compared the secrecy to one of TV’s most famous cliffhangers:
“There was some fun to having multiple endings — like the ‘Who Shot J.R.?’ moment, if I’m going to date myself,” she said, referencing Dallas. “How many different ways could it go?”
In other words, every version felt real — and that was the point.
Where Do the Characters End Up?
While the full picture remains hidden, some cast members teased hints about their characters’ final moments.
Sophie Skelton, who plays Brianna Fraser, shared:
“Brianna’s at peace, and that makes me very happy,”
David Berry also hinted at Lord John Grey’s resolution:
“Something I get asked a lot is, ‘Will John find love of his own?’ I think this season will address that head on.”
He added:
“Lord John’s story ends in a place that I’m very happy with,”
The Cast Promises a Powerful Goodbye
When Starz confirmed in 2023 that Outlander would end after Season 8, the cast shared an emotional announcement.
Sam Heughan began:
“Every good story has to come to an end,”
Balfe followed with:
“It always does.”
John Bell promised:
“We’re going to go out with a bang and tell the story how it should be,”
Skelton reassured fans:
“It’s not over yet,”
And Richard Rankin added:
“With love and enthusiasm.”
Heughan later said:
“We can’t wait to bring the last season to you guys,”
Balfe closed the message with:
“We hope that we do you proud.”
One thing is certain: when Outlander ends, it won’t just surprise fans.
It might surprise the cast, too.
