Inside the Love Lives of the Supernatural Cast — From On-Set Romances to Fairy Tale Endings

Supernatural may have centered on chasing demons and battling the paranormal, but behind the scenes, the long-running series sparked its own real-life love stories.

The hit CW drama ran for 15 seasons from 2005 to 2020, following brothers Sam and Dean Winchester — played by Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles — as they traveled across the country fighting ghosts, demons and dark family secrets. While the Winchesters were saving the world on-screen, several cast members were finding lasting connections off-screen.

Jared Padalecki met his future wife, Genevieve Padalecki, when she joined the show as the demon Ruby. Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who played the Winchesters’ father, found love through a castmate’s introduction, eventually marrying actress Hilarie Burton. One star even met and married a fan he encountered at a Supernatural convention.

When the series finale aired on Nov. 19, 2020, it marked an emotional farewell for the cast — and a moment of reflection on the relationships the show helped create. Genevieve honored the milestone with a heartfelt Instagram tribute to Jared, writing, “Jared, what you have given to Sam Winchester, to the cast, the crew, the friends you’ve met, the family you’ve grown is immeasurable. You walked in a young kid of 23 and walked away married to a demon and spawned 3 children.”

From on-set meet-cutes to fan encounters turned fairy tales, here are the real-life love stories that began in the world of Supernatural.

Jared met Genevieve on set, where she appeared as Ruby. “I was a single dude, and she was a pretty girl in her underwear on her first day on set,” he told fans at a 2012 panel. “I was very excited to meet her … I interrupted her while she was reading a book and I think she got kind of fussy about it.”

He proposed in 2009 in front of her favorite painting, Joan of Arc at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art. They married in 2010 in her hometown of Sun Valley, Idaho, and later moved to Austin, Texas, where they live with their three children.

Reflecting on their journey, Genevieve wrote after the 2020 finale, “Because of this show, we’re now celebrating almost 11 years married, 3 amazing kids, traveling the world together, and making incredible friends who have formed and shaped who we are today.”

In 2021, the couple reunited on-screen in Walker. “Being able to show her off to the cast and crew was awesome,” Jared told PEOPLE, noting how much she supported him while he filmed Supernatural in Vancouver.

Jensen has been married to actress Danneel Ackles since 2010. The two first worked together on the 2007 film Ten Inch Hero, though they married before Danneel appeared on Supernatural in 2018.

They now share three children: daughter Justice Jay, born in 2013, and twins Zeppelin Bram and Arrow Rhodes, born in 2016. They later launched Chaos Machine Productions and co-executive produced The Winchesters. They also co-own Family Business Beer Co., a brewery inspired by a nod to Jensen’s Supernatural roots.

Misha Collins, known for playing Castiel, was married to author Victoria Vantoch for over two decades before separating, a fact he confirmed in the acknowledgments of his 2021 poetry book Some Things I Still Can’t Tell You.

He appeared to debut a new relationship in August 2024, posting a photo with Emily Farallon at the Democratic National Convention, captioning it, “Emily’s so excited to be here, she finally let me post a photo.” The couple has since shared posts from hikes and kitchen moments, and in November 2025, they published essays on Substack about their relationship and values.

Mark Sheppard, who played Crowley, met his wife Sarah Louise Sheppard at a 2014 Supernatural convention in Vancouver. She recalled on Instagram, “That was going to be my last convention but I was having a drink with some friends… & a certain Mark Sheppard was waved over to join us. It was like time stopped when we started talking.”

Though she acknowledged conversations about Mark dating a fan, she emphasized that she and Mark were “the real deal.” They welcomed daughter Isabella Rose in 2016 and also parent Mark’s two sons from a previous marriage.

In 2023, Mark credited Sarah with saving his life after he suffered six heart attacks, writing, “If not for my wife… I wouldn’t be writing this.”

Jensen Ackles and Danneel Ackles introduced Jeffrey Dean Morgan to Hilarie Burton on a blind date in 2009. They welcomed their son Augustus in 2010, daughter George Virginia in 2018, and married officially in 2019.

“We had built this life together. We’d had kids together. I think there comes a point where you just don’t want to go another day by being inauthentic about it,” Burton told PEOPLE.

They later appeared together in The Walking Dead, where Burton played Lucille — Negan’s late wife — with their son making his acting debut in the same episode. Morgan called the experience “the highlight of [his] career.”

“Ty and I became inseparable at the very beginning,” Qualls shared on his podcast. “Over the last 10 years, our relationship evolved to what it is today and now we’re getting married.”

Olsson later thanked fans for their support, writing, “sending you all some love and hugs.”
