This Early Supernatural Episode Changed the Show Forever

When Supernatural first premiered, creator Eric Kripke was still shaping what the series would become.

At the start, the show looked like a classic monster-hunting drama. But over time, it evolved into something deeper — focusing on family, sacrifice, and the emotional bond between brothers Dean and Sam Winchester.

That transformation is widely linked to one specific episode.

The Moment the Show Realized It Was About More Than Monsters

According to an oral history published by Variety, actor Jared Padalecki said the turning point came during Season 1.

“It was right around the episode ‘Faith’ where the writers realized this show isn’t just about what kind of monsters we can kill but what the brothers can go through together.”

The relationship between Dean and Sam — played by Jensen Ackles and Padalecki — slowly became the emotional core of the series.

Early in the story, Dean was comfortable continuing the monster-hunting legacy taught by their father, while Sam resisted that lifestyle.

The father figure, John Winchester, portrayed by Jeffrey Dean Morgan, later became important as the season developed themes of sacrifice and loyalty within the family.

The Episode That Defined the New Direction — Faith

The turning point episode was Faith.

It was the only episode of the series directed by Allan Kroeker, who also worked on shows like Star Trek: Enterprise and Chuck.

The episode was written by longtime series contributors Sera Gamble and Raelle Tucker.

The Story That Forced a Moral Choice

The episode begins with a hunting mission gone wrong.

Dean suffers an electric shock that triggers a serious heart attack. After learning that medicine cannot save him and that he may have only months to live, Sam searches for a supernatural cure.

The solution comes from faith healer Roy Le Grange, played by Kevin McNulty.

Roy’s healing power is secretly tied to a reaper controlled by his wife Sue Ann, portrayed by Rebecca Jenkins, with the reaper character played by Alex Diakun.

The dark twist was that every life saved by Roy’s ability required another life to be taken.

Why Faith Was a Turning Point

After Dean was healed and the truth was uncovered, the story focused less on the monster itself and more on the brothers’ struggle to stop the supernatural force behind the healing.

The emotional weight of the episode came from Sam’s desperate effort to save Dean and the moral dilemma at its center — saving one life while potentially costing another.

From that point forward, the creators leaned more heavily into personal relationships and metaphysical storytelling rather than pure “monster of the week” plots.

The Legacy of One Episode

The shift that began with Faith helped define what made Supernatural special: not just ghosts and creatures, but the story of two brothers willing to risk everything for each other.

Even as the show continued for many seasons, that early decision shaped its emotional identity.

For fans, it’s a reminder that sometimes a single episode can change the destiny of an entire series.
