Sam Heughan Debuts Shocking New Look as He Moves Beyond Outlander

Sam Heughan is entering a new chapter — and fans immediately noticed the change.

The Outlander star surprised many viewers with a dramatically different appearance while wrapping his first major role after the long-running historical drama. The 45-year-old actor has traded Outlander hero Jamie Fraser’s signature long red hair for a close-cropped dark blond hairstyle, marking a clear transition away from the character that defined his career for more than a decade.

In an exclusive March 4 interview with Parade, Heughan reflected on the transformation and the new projects that are shaping his life after Outlander.

The Look That Marked the End of an Era

Heughan first revealed his dramatic haircut at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2025, instantly sparking conversation among fans. For years, audiences associated him with Jamie Fraser’s flowing red hair and Highland warrior image. The new look, which returns to his natural dark blond color, signaled a break from that iconic role.

According to the actor, the change was both practical and symbolic after years of hair dye and wigs during production of the STARZ series.

“I kind of miss the kilt sometimes, but it’s also nice to just put on a pair of jeans and go to work,” he said.

The updated style also reflected the start of a new creative phase in his career.

From Highland Warrior to Modern-Day Soldier

After spending 12 years portraying Jamie Fraser, Heughan is now stepping into a completely different world. His next project is the thriller Embassy, where he plays Connor Wright, a sergeant in the SAS special forces.

The series centers on an attack on the U.S. Embassy in London that forces Connor to confront unresolved issues from his past when his former partner Layla becomes involved in the crisis.

“There’s about identity, about love. There’s a lot of history, a lot of gray areas, a lot of politics involved and a lot of cool action as well,” Heughan explained.

The role marks a major shift from historical romance to modern geopolitical drama — something the actor had long been eager to explore.

Why Heughan Wanted to Move Beyond Jamie Fraser

Heughan has often acknowledged how deeply Jamie Fraser shaped his life and career. Still, he has been clear that acting has always been about transformation and variety.

“I think they forget that I am an actor and that the reason I got into acting was to play different parts,” he told Parade.

Jamie Fraser may have become his most famous role, but Heughan’s roots began in theater, and he has always intended to explore different characters across genres.

“Hopefully, they’re excited for us and will follow us on our journeys, and if they miss Jamie Fraser that much, they can always rewatch or read the books, and I will with them, because I’m a fan now myself.”

Life After Outlander

While Heughan prepares for new acting opportunities, his work outside the screen has also grown significantly.

The actor launched his spirits brand Sassenach Spirits, which now includes vodka, gin, tequila, and whisky. In 2025, he also fully financed the Galloway Distillery in his hometown in Scotland, investing in the local economy and expanding his business interests.

At the same time, Heughan continues to support charitable causes through his global wellness initiative My Peak Challenge. The community has raised more than $8 million for blood-cancer research, environmental efforts, and programs fighting global hunger.

What Comes Next

Production on the final season of Outlander wrapped in July 2024, though the eighth season continues airing through March 2026. Meanwhile, author Diana Gabaldon is still working on the tenth and final novel in the book series that inspired the show.

Heughan says he remains proud of everything the series achieved, even as he looks forward to what comes next.

“Our story has ended, our journey has, but the books will go on,” he reflected.

With a bold new look, a modern action role, and growing ventures beyond acting, Sam Heughan appears ready to move into a completely new phase of his career.
