Jensen Ackles has revealed how he would bring Supernatural back, and his idea could have given the beloved series a very different ending.
The actor, who played Dean Winchester for all 15 seasons of the hit series, recently discussed an alternate way the show could have wrapped up. Rather than giving Sam and Dean a definitive ending, Ackles said he would have preferred the finale to leave the door open for their return.
According to Ackles, the perfect cliffhanger would have involved Jack appearing during the final moments of the series and telling the Winchester brothers that he needed to send them back.
“During that kind of like reunion, I would have liked to have Jack come through the front door and just walk up to Sam and Dean and just be like, ‘I need to send you guys back.’”
That moment, Ackles suggested, could have completely changed the way fans viewed the ending. Instead of closing the book on Sam and Dean, the scene would have left viewers wondering where the brothers were going and what their next supernatural adventure might look like.
And, perhaps most importantly for fans hoping to see the Winchesters again, Ackles believes the idea could still work.
“BTW, that could happen… we could go back.”
The comment is likely to fuel speculation about a potential Supernatural return, although Ackles’ idea is currently just his own concept for how the story could have been left open.
After 15 seasons and more than 300 episodes, Supernatural concluded in 2020 with Sam and Dean’s story seemingly reaching its final chapter. The series remains one of television’s longest-running genre dramas, and the continued interest in the Winchester brothers has kept the possibility of another return alive among fans.
