Caitríona Balfe’s Claire Fraser discovers that she may be haunted by a familiar spirit in a touching deleted scene from the final season of Outlander.
As Outlander season 8 prepares for its DVD and Blu-ray Collector’s Edition release on September 22, a previously unseen scene offers fans an emotional moment involving Claire, Young Ian and his family.
In the deleted scene, Ian James/Swiftest of Lizards, played by Nikosis Sakihaw Kingfisher, rushes over to Claire and affectionately asks his “Great Auntie Witch” if he can have another biscuit. Rachel, played by Izzy Meikle-Small, immediately tells him off for using the nickname.
“I’d say we were sorry, but I’m not,” Young Ian, played by John Bell, says from his seat beside his wife. “Wait to you hear this: Tell your Auntie Claire where you got that name for her.”
Ian James then happily reveals the surprising reason, saying: “I’ve seen you as a witch in my dreams!”
Young Ian explains that the boy has prophetic dreams, much like his mother, Emily, played by Morgan Holmstrom. He recalls one particularly revealing dream.
“He said he saw my da, and that I should be happy because he was walking on two legs again,” he explains. “But I never once told him that my dad lost a leg.”
Ian James has another unusual ability, however. The young boy can also see ghosts, and Claire soon learns that a mysterious spirit has been appearing around her.
When Claire asks whether there are any spirits surrounding her, Ian James replies: “There is a man. I’ve seen him more than once. He wears spectacles and a funny hat with a short brim.”
The revelation clearly catches Claire off guard, but Ian James assures her that there is no reason to be frightened.
“You should not worry. He means you no harm,” the boy continues. “He’s a man who loved you. He follows your husband, too.”
Claire then turns toward Young Ian and Rachel in disbelief, seemingly realizing exactly who the boy is describing, even though the spirit’s name is never spoken.
The emotional scene is among several deleted moments that will be included with the home-video release of Outlander season 8. The final season’s DVD and Blu-ray editions will contain all ten episodes, along with additional deleted scenes, a blooper reel and a retrospective featurette titled “Outlander for All Time,” celebrating the show’s legacy.
The Blu-ray Collector’s Edition will also include special cards and a 32-page booklet featuring behind-the-scenes photographs from the series. Fans will additionally receive heartfelt letters written by members of the cast and producers to the show’s dedicated fanbase.
There is more Outlander content on the way as well. Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced a DVD box set collecting all eight seasons of the series, along with additional extras, ahead of the holidays.
For Outlander fans, it looks like there will be one more opportunity to return to Craigh na Dun.
