The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 4 Update: Scott M. Gimple Reveals Renewal Chances
Fans of The Walking Dead: Dead City are still waiting for news about the future of the spin-off, and executive producer Scott M. Gimple has now shared an update on the possibility of season four.
The series, which first premiered in 2023, follows the unlikely alliance between former enemies Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and Maggie Rhee (Lauren Cohan) as they navigate a dangerous new chapter in their lives.
The first season focused on Maggie seeking Negan’s help to rescue her kidnapped son Hershel (Logan Kim) from The Croat (Željko Ivanek). What started as a partnership built on necessity slowly developed into a complicated friendship between the two characters.
Season three aired earlier this year and ended with Maggie taking control of the Manhattan community while revealing her plans to expand her influence across other boroughs. The ending left fans wondering what could come next for the characters and whether the story will continue with another season.
Speaking to The Direct, Scott M. Gimple revealed that The Walking Dead: Dead City has a strong possibility of returning for season four, although the current television landscape makes renewal decisions more complicated than before.
“I would hope for everyone to hold out hope, because it’s performing well in the numbers, and people are digging it. So, I think it’s got a good shot at it, but it is a different time,” he said.
Gimple also reflected on how the success of The Walking Dead was once easier to predict through traditional ratings, explaining that the rise of streaming has completely changed how shows are evaluated.
“When I was showrunning [The Walking Dead], I could calculate, ‘Okay, if the ratings halve every year, we have three to four years left.’ That’s insane,” he continued.
“Now, it’s just… The metrics are not as cut-and-dried, and the economics are very different. So, we’ll see what happens. But the greater story of [The Walking Dead] absolutely is going to go on.”
While the future of Dead City season four remains uncertain, The Walking Dead universe is far from finished. The next major release for fans will be season four of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, which will serve as the final chapter of Norman Reedus’ character’s spin-off. The season is expected to debut in 2027.
The original The Walking Dead series concluded in 2022 after 11 seasons, but several spin-offs continued expanding the franchise. Fear the Walking Dead ended in 2023, while The Walking Dead: World Beyond and the Rick Grimes and Michonne Hawthorne miniseries The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live have also reached their conclusions.
The franchise continues to move forward, with Dead City potentially becoming one of the remaining stories keeping the world of The Walking Dead alive on screen.
